Panel topic: Satellite-direct-to-phone (Sat2Phone) technology is one of the most talk-about innovations in the communications industry, as the ability for low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite to act as a “cell towers in space” has significant implications for users and network operators. For critical-communications users, the promise that a smart device—without a special satellite receiver—can still be used outdoors anywhere on the globe is incredibly attractive, dramatically altering long-held perceptions about LTE reliability. For carriers and other network operators, the ability to keep users connected certainly is positive, and effective Sat2Phone could even impact future roaming and tower-building strategies in remote areas.
